Unraveling a human attitude towards the 'expressive earth', Containing the Sacred is also a meditation on the necessity of protecting nature, and understanding the role of indigenous or local peoples in maintaining a landscape. Through local ecologies, cultures and customs. Banović filmed this footage during her stay with a Candomblé community and her long lasting research (ongoing since 2006) within this Afro-Brazilian religion.


Containing the Sacred shows humans relating to 'expressive earth' and meditates on the aesthetic practices of human-nature ecological relationships. Hereby the video emphasizes the vital role of indigenous and/or local peoples sustain their landscapes and honor these through ritualized interconnectedness.

The ritual in the forest of Saint Roch (Milagre de São Roque, Brazil) concerns a pilgrimage to a steep rock formation from which water seeps, even in the dry season. On the way believers pick banana leaves, with which they collect drops of water and fill plastic bottles. This water will protect them from evil. Banović filmed this footage during her stay with a Candomblé community and her long lasting research (ongoing since 2006) within this Afro-Brazilian religion.
